206 Alder Bistro & Bar is a lunch and happy-hour bistro and cocktail bar at 206 E Alder St in Oakland's historic downtown. It pairs locally sourced food with carefully made cocktails, and it works equally well for a sit-down meal or a quick bite to carry out while you're in town.

Seasonal Food With a Few Constants

The kitchen rotates its menu with the seasons while keeping a handful of crowd favorites on year-round, so there's usually something new without losing the dishes regulars come back for. The menu leans toward sandwiches, salads and shareable plates:

• Sandwiches and specials such as a caprese panini, hot ham and cheese, a Reuben, a Rachel, a smash burger and a rotating sandwich of the week
• Soups and salads, with sides to round out lunch
• Small plates including flatbreads, a hummus platter, a pretzel charcuterie board, peach burrata, smoked salmon canapés, mini crab cakes and a cheddar cheese dip

If you're short on time, the bistro also offers a quick scan-and-go sandwich or salad and online ordering for pickup.

Cocktails, Wine and Local Beer

The bar is built around what the owners call deliberate cocktails, from a mezcal margarita and espresso martini to a Bloody Mary and a Garrett County Old Fashioned. You'll also find a short wine list, a spirits selection and a beer list that includes several Screech Owl brews alongside familiar national labels, plus non-alcoholic options.

A Downtown Oakland Story

206 Alder was opened by Helga and Monique Mehring, who have said they started it after Sipside closed because they love the town. The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Oakland and the Greater Oakland Business Association marked the bistro's first anniversary with a ribbon cutting in October 2024.

It's an easy stop for lunch or an early evening drink when you're exploring the shops and streets around downtown Oakland.
