About
The Maryland Department of Labor runs the Allegany County American Job Center in the McMullen Building on Baltimore Street in downtown Cumberland, one of the Western Maryland American Job Centers. The center helps job seekers find work and training and helps employers find and keep workers.
Help for Job Seekers
The department says job seekers can meet with consultants about career exploration, referrals to training programs, résumé preparation and workshops on job-seeking skills and work readiness. The centers offer computers with internet access, printers, photocopiers, fax machines, telephones and job search materials. Orientation sessions explain the services and partner agencies, and staff can also meet one on one. Veterans can get help finding jobs and training, vocational guidance, referrals to support services and case management.
Services for Businesses
Maryland's Business Services staff at the Western Maryland American Job Centers work with employers on state resources, recruiting and retention. The department also publishes local labor force, industry, occupation and wage data, and offers information on registered apprenticeships, wage and hour remedies, minor work permits and unemployment insurance.
Online and Nearby Offices
The Maryland Workforce Exchange is the state's online job board, where you can search openings, post résumés and look for training. In Garrett County, the Garrett County American Job Center is run with the Western Maryland Consortium on Garrett Highway in McHenry, and a Washington County center operates in Hagerstown.
