About

Backbone Food Farm is a diversified family farm on 530 Lynndale Rd outside Oakland, on 106 acres at the foot of Backbone Mountain. It raises vegetables, mushrooms, cut flowers and pastured meats, and sells them through a flexible CSA, farmers markets and online pre-orders.

What the Farm Grows

The farm describes its methods as sustainable and organic: no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, no GMOs, pasture for its grazing animals, and crop rotation with compost and cover crops. In season you'll find a wide range of vegetables and herbs, blueberries and rhubarb, and cut flowers by the bunch or bucket, along with grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken and, at announced intervals, pastured pork. Shiitake and oyster mushrooms come from the farm's own mycology program, which also runs mushroom-cultivation workshops, foraging walks and consulting for growers.

How to Buy

  • Free Choice CSA: you load money onto a card at the start of the season (mid-May into November), get a bonus in Backbone Dollars, and spend it on whatever you want, when you want it.
  • Farmers markets: look for the farm at the Mountain Fresh Pavilion in downtown Oakland; there are also pickup points in Thomas and Canaan Valley, WV.
  • Online pre-orders: order through GrownBy for quick pickup at a market or at the farm.
  • Flowers for events: farm-grown arrangements for parties and occasions, by request.

More Than a Market Stand

Owned by the Dubansky family, the farm has been family run since 1999, and Garrett County's commissioners marked its 25th anniversary in 2024. It also hosts an on-farm day camp for kids ages 4 to 12, plus occasional concerts and farm dinners.

Call the farm to ask about a CSA share, a flower order or this season's events.
