About
Believe In Tomorrow Children's Foundation is a Baltimore-based nonprofit that provides hospital and respite housing for critically ill children and their families, with the goal of keeping families together during a child's illness. It began in 1982 as a volunteer effort to help critically ill children during treatment at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and University of Maryland hospitals. Since 1986 it has provided more than 900,000 individual overnight accommodations to families from every state and more than 90 countries.
The foundation's hospital housing program is the Believe In Tomorrow Children's House at Johns Hopkins, which offers overnight accommodations to families of children receiving critical care at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. A new Children's House near the hospital is planned under a 2023 agreement with Johns Hopkins University.
In 1986 the foundation created the first pediatric respite housing program in the United States. Its respite homes give families a break from treatment at beach and mountain locations. Two of them are in Garrett County: the House on Wisp Mountain, a four-bedroom log cabin overlooking Deep Creek Lake that opened in 2006, and the House at Deep Creek Lake next door, a four-bedroom, handicapped-accessible log home that opened in 2019. Both are in McHenry. Other respite homes are in Ocean City, MD, Fenwick Island, DE, and near Asheville, NC.
The mountain homes rely on local volunteers for welcome baskets, local outreach, family photography, deep cleaning, gardening, seasonal decorating, maintenance projects and wish list drives. A Military Initiative gives priority status to military families facing a child's critical illness.
