Big Savage Hiking Trail – Southern Trailhead is the southern end of the Big Savage Hiking Trail, a 17-mile, hiking-only route that follows the ridgeline of Big Savage Mountain through Savage River State Forest. It starts at the Whitewater campsites near the Savage River Reservoir, off Savage River Road in Swanton, and suits experienced hikers and backpackers.
On the Trail
DNR rates the trail difficult, with steep, rocky terrain. It passes through upland oak and hickory forest, old pine-planted farmsteads, wild azalea and rhododendron, and the remnants of an old fire tower lookout at High Rock. The route is marked with white blazes, but Garrett Trails notes that good route-finding skills are essential for a full traverse. It's open to hikers only, with no mechanized or motorized use. DNR suggests starting at the St. John's Rock trailhead at the north end, so many through-hikers finish here.
Camping and Permits
Overnight trips need a backpack camping permit, available at Savage River State Forest headquarters, at the outdoor kiosk, or by mail using the form on DNR's site. Camp at least 200 feet from any trail or stream, and keep food out of your tent, since this is bear country. Campfires are allowed except during drought. The Whitewater Campground at the trailhead has nine first-come, first-served sites south of the reservoir with a portable toilet.
Before You Go
Reliable water sources along the ridge are limited, so carry plenty. DNR asks hikers to call forest headquarters before setting out, leashed pets are welcome in the forest, and blaze orange is a good idea during hunting seasons. Along the same road you'll also find the Savage River Reservoir South Boat Ramp near the dam, plus Savage River Public Fishing Access and Savage River Outfitters downstream.
Pack extra water and a map, and give yourself plenty of daylight for this one.
