Blackthorne Cellars

Blackthorne Cellars is a farm winery at 2781 Sand Flat Rd, Oakland, MD 21550, at the end of a gravel lane off Sand Flat Road near Deep Creek Lake. Owned by Mike and Amy Ohm, it opened over Labor Day weekend 2025 and pours its own wines by the flight, glass or bottle, with shareable food to go alongside.

The Wines and the Food

The lineup runs from off-dry and dry whites to bold reds and sparkling wine. Bottles carry local and family names, including Lazy Daisy (an off-dry blend), Creek (Sauvignon Blanc), Cove (rosé), Boxer (Cabernet Franc), Pine (Merlot) and Bliss (a sparkling white), and several of the winery's wines have been recognized at California wine competitions. The owners plan to plant their own vineyard in the coming years. For food, staff build boards of cheese, meats, spreads, bread and crackers, and the kitchen also turns out pizzas and handhelds meant for pairing with wine. You're welcome to bring a picnic, though hot food, catering and delivery aren't allowed, and outside alcohol is prohibited under Maryland law.

Fireside Inside, Music Outside

Inside, a handmade wooden bar runs along one side of the tasting room and a large wood-burning fireplace warms the other. Outdoors there's a covered wrap-around porch, fire pits and seating spread across the property among the pines. An outdoor stage hosts live music through the season, mostly acoustic solo artists, duos and bands.

Before You Go

From Deep Creek Lake, take Route 219 south to Sand Flat Road; the winery is about 1.5 miles down on the right. Walk-ins are welcome, and tables seat up to 10, so larger groups sit separately. Families are welcome, with children kept within arm's reach of an adult. Leashed dogs (six-foot leash or shorter) can join you in the outdoor areas, but only service animals are allowed in the tasting room. Guests are asked to stay inside the fenced area rather than hiking into the forest, and pop-up shelters and personal speakers aren't permitted.
