Blue Moon Rising

Blue Moon Rising is a wooded collection of 14 small, eco-minded cabins at 89 Blue Moon Rising Way in McHenry, on the Deep Creek Lake side of Garrett County. It is a good fit for couples, small families and friends who want a cabin of their own with a light footprint, and for groups planning a woodland wedding, retreat or reunion.

Built to Live Lightly

Founder Lisa M. Jan set out in 2008 to combine vacation rentals with sustainable construction, aiming to leave as little impact on the landscape as possible without giving up comfort. Builders used straw bale walls finished with natural plaster made from excavated soil mixed with clay, water and lime, and reused trees cleared during construction as trim, support posts and firewood for a high-efficiency masonry stove. Many cabins are finished with reclaimed or recycled materials, so no two look alike.

The Cabins

Each of the 14 named cabins (Bella Donna, Blue Sky, Cairn, Evergreen, Funkomatik 513, Kaya, Luna Bleu, MoonShadow, MoonShine, Morning Glory, Orion, Skya, Sugar Magnolia and Walden) sleeps either one to two or three to four guests. What to expect:

• A full bathroom in every cabin; some add an outdoor shower or a claw-foot tub
• A compact kitchen with a mini fridge and NuWave cooktop
• Free Wi-Fi throughout, and some ADA-accessible cabins
• Settings that range from near the office and parking to deeper in the woods, by the community fire pit, or with a lake view

The site has an interactive map so you can pick a spot that suits your group.

Dogs, Trails and Gatherings

Blue Moon Rising describes itself as dog-friendly "if your dog is friendly," with several dog-friendly cabins and hiking trails on the property. The grounds also host intimate woodland weddings, retreats, reunions and parties for families, friends and corporate teams, with separate planning pages for each.

Check the individual cabin pages to compare sleeping setups and dog-friendly options, then book online or call with questions about events.
