Broad Ford School

Broad Ford School is a Garrett County Public Schools elementary school at 605 Harvey Winters Drive in Oakland, serving children from pre-kindergarten through the elementary grades. It is the neighborhood public school for many Oakland-area families.

A Renovated Home

Broad Ford now occupies the former Southern Middle School building. In 2024 Garrett County Public Schools announced that the middle school would close and the building would be extensively renovated and expanded to house Broad Ford. The project was designed by BFM Architects and built by Howard Shockey & Sons, and the school held its ribbon cutting in May 2026. The renovated building has modern classrooms, upgraded technology and flexible learning spaces meant to support collaboration and hands-on learning.

Programs and Support

Broad Ford is a Title I school and offers a public Pre-K program alongside kindergarten and the elementary grades. It is one of the schools linked with the Garrett County Judy Center, a partnership between the school system and Garrett County Community Action that helps young children and their families get ready for school.
