About
Broken Spoke Stables is a horse boarding and lesson barn at 3783 Pleasant Valley Road in Oakland, run by Tammy, who was born and raised in Garrett County, with an all-women staff. It's a working stable for horse owners and riders who want boarding, training and lessons, rather than a drop-in trail-ride spot.
Boarding, Training and Lessons
Broken Spoke boards horses, including seniors over 30, and the barn offers care and support through a horse's final years. Hay is baled right on the farm. Tammy's training program works step by step with owners as well as horses, and the stable can help you market a horse you want to sell, with a page of horses for sale on its website.
Riding lessons are offered for children and adults, and the barn's own reference list runs from students aged 4 to 77. The stable says it has taught more than 1,000 riding clients and trained more than 70 horses in recent years. Its motto, "We are women training horses for women," reflects how the business started, though it now trains for men too.
Shows and Competitions
Riders here work in western pleasure, trail, ranch riding and leadline classes, and the barn takes students to a season of summer shows, including Somerset, Mt. Top Saddle Club and WVU events. Each fall, Broken Spoke hosts its own Annual Fall Free Style Competition with a new theme every year.
Tammy notes that calls missed during lessons or training are returned by the end of the day, so leave a message and she will get back to you.
