About
Brookfield Renewable owns and runs Deep Creek Hydro, the hydroelectric station whose dam created Deep Creek Lake. The station's office is at 14 River View Terrace near Oakland,.
About the Station
Deep Creek Hydro is a two-unit, 20 MW hydroelectric station built in 1925. An earth and rockfill dam about 1,300 feet long holds back the lake, and a power tunnel more than 7,000 feet long carries water down to a brick powerhouse on the Youghiogheny River near Hoyes Run, where two Francis-type turbines produce the power.
Lake Levels and River Releases
Besides making electricity, the station manages the lake level, supports fisheries and releases water for whitewater boating on the Upper Youghiogheny. It works under a Maryland Department of the Environment water appropriation permit. The permit sets an operating rule band for lake levels and covers minimum flows, river temperature enhancement and scheduled whitewater releases.
Checking Flows Before You Go
Brookfield's Safe Waters page for Deep Creek shows how many turbines are generating, the current lake elevation and the short-term release schedule.
