About
Casselman Bakery and Café is the Deep Creek Lake outpost of The Casselman in Grantsville, a family business built around home cooking and scratch baking. You'll find it at 19595 Garrett Hwy in Oakland, along the Route 219 corridor through the lake area, and it's a handy stop for anyone who wants fresh bread, baked goods or a homestyle lunch without driving to Grantsville.
From the Oven and the Lunch Counter
The café opened in the spring of 2018 to bring The Casselman's baking tradition to the lake. The bakery side covers cookies, hot pepperoni rolls and homemade bread, all made from scratch. For lunch there's a full salad bar and daily lunch specials, so the menu changes with the day. Guests have also described breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, cinnamon rolls and fried hand pies, which makes it worth a look in the morning as well as at midday.
A Family Business With Deep Roots
The Casselman's home base is a brick inn in Grantsville built in 1842 on the Old Pike, which once served stagecoaches, covered wagons and drovers. Ivan and Della Miller acquired the property in 1964 and added a dining room, bake shop and motel, and it is still a second-generation family-owned operation. The Grantsville restaurant describes its recipes as reflecting the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish background of its owners, and that same style of cooking carries over to the Deep Creek café. The Grantsville bakery also takes custom orders for cakes and other baked goods, and its breads, cinnamon rolls, pies, jams and jellies show the range of what the family bakes.
Stop in when you're passing through on Garrett Highway and pick up a loaf of bread for the week at the lake.
