About
The Community Trust Foundation is a nonprofit public foundation based in Cumberland that serves the tri-county area of Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland and Mineral County, West Virginia. It brings together donations from individuals, families and businesses and gives grants and scholarships to support the region.
The foundation was created in 2006 as the Allegany Garrett Community Foundation, with support from the Tri-County Council for Western Maryland. It took the name Community Trust Foundation when Mineral County joined in 2007. It manages charitable assets through more than 100 individual funds, each set up for the charitable intent of the donor who created it. Since 2010 it has provided scholarships and grants to nonprofits for education, culture and wellness.
Its areas of giving are the arts and historic preservation, education and youth leadership, scholarships, health and wellness, and vibrant communities and a thriving environment. Nonprofits can apply for grants through its online grant portal, and students can find local scholarships on its site. It also works with financial advisors whose clients want to give.
Advisory councils for Allegany, Garrett and Mineral counties share local knowledge with the foundation. The Garrett County Fund began making annual grants to county causes in 2024, and its first awards went to the Deep Creek Watershed Foundation and HART for Animals.
