About
DeBerry Farm Fresh Produce is a small, family-owned produce farm in Oakland run by Charles and Cheryl DeBerry. They grow more than 50 kinds of vegetables along with melons, herbs, gourds and berries, and sell them at a seasonal farm stand at 110 DeBerry Lane, at area farmers markets and through the Garrett Growers cooperative. It's a good place to start if you want to cook with produce picked close to home.
How the Farm Grew
Charles and Cheryl started the farm in 1998, the year they married, with half an acre of tomatoes and peppers sold at a single farmers market. Charles first grew vegetables in high school as an FFA project, and the farm has since grown to eight to ten acres, with the family working in the fields together.
The DeBerrys describe their approach as low input. They use organic and all-natural methods to manage weeds, insects and disease where they can, use no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and grow no GMO crops. The farm is not certified organic, and they say so plainly on their own site.
Where to Find Their Produce
- The farm stand on DeBerry Lane, across from Lowe's in Oakland, sells the farm's own produce alongside their cousins' sweet corn, other local farm items, bouquets and sunflowers.
- The Mountain Fresh Farmers Market in downtown Oakland and the Morgantown Farmers Market in Morgantown, West Virginia.
- Garrett Growers, the local farmer cooperative, which sells their produce to restaurants, caterers and retailers.
- Jarred goods such as pepper jelly and pumpkin butter, carried by shops including The Gallery Shop in Oakland and Firefly Farms Creamery and Market in Accident. Wholesome Harvest Co-op in Frostburg also carries their Bloody Mary mix.
Before You Go
The stand is seasonal, and the DeBerrys post opening news on their Facebook page, so check there before you drive out. The farm doesn't grow tree fruit and doesn't offer farm visits, so the stand and the markets are the places to shop. If you'd like a mixed case of 12 or more jars for gifts, the farm takes case orders, and jar availability changes through the year.
Give the farm a call if you're wondering what's coming off the field this week.
