Deep Creek Pottery

Deep Creek Pottery is a pottery studio and shop at 1550 Deep Creek Drive, Suites C & D in McHenry. You can browse handmade pottery, mosaic tile pieces and glass resin suncatchers, pick a piece to paint yourself, or sign up for a class to learn the clay side of things. It's an easy creative outing for families, groups and visitors looking for something to do off the water.

Paint, Mosaic and Clay Projects

Paint-your-own pottery is the simplest way in: you choose a ceramic piece, decorate it, and the studio handles the glazing and firing. Mosaic tile creations are another hands-on option, and themed events have offered a clay project as well. Visits typically run one to two hours, which makes the studio a good fit for a rainy afternoon, a birthday or a bachelorette group.

Classes for Adults and Kids

The studio runs community pottery classes as multi-week series that cover pinch, coil and slab hand-building plus an introduction to the pottery wheel, with glazes and firings included. A kids pottery class rotates projects each week, students pick their own glaze colors, finished pieces are usually ready within about two weeks, and parents are welcome to join in. Check the studio's Facebook page or the Garrett County Chamber calendar for the current class schedule.

A Local Studio That Grew

Deep Creek Pottery hosted wheel demonstrations at its earlier home on Laurel Ridge Road in McHenry before moving to the Deep Creek Drive studio, where it celebrated its first year in November 2024. It also hosts seasonal events such as a kids Halloween party with costume parades and crafts, and it has partnered with Garrett College on a holiday ceramic-painting workshop.

Since fired pieces take a little time to finish, plan your painting visit early in your stay so you can take your work home.
