About
Deep Creek Yacht Club is a member-run sailing and social club at 855 Shoreline Drive in the Thousand Acres area of Swanton, at the south end of Deep Creek Lake. It is open to any individual or family with an interest in sailing, from beginners to experienced racers.
A Club Built by Its Members
The club was chartered as a nonprofit in the 1930s and incorporated in Maryland in 1948. For its first years it sailed from leased property on Turkey Neck, across the lake. In 1965 members bought the lakefront land on Shoreline Drive and built the clubhouse themselves on weekends; it opened in August 1966. The building has a shared kitchen, dining room and bar, a large event room, residential staterooms and dormitories, with a family dormitory and a separate stateroom building added later. An elected eight-member board runs the club.
Racing and Regattas
Racing is at the heart of the summer here, with fleets for the Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association, Flying Scots and Lasers. The club's racing calendar includes summer series and named regattas such as the Becker Cup, the Women's & Junior Regatta, the Firecracker Regatta, the Laser Invitational, the Sandy Douglass Memorial Regatta, the Commodore's Cup and the Fair Winds Regatta, along with regional and national events. Some classes from Deep Creek Sailing School meet at the club, and juniors from the school often sail over during their weeks.
Joining and Social Life
New members start with a one-year trial membership with a sponsor before moving to full corporate or junior (ages 21 to 30) membership, which includes use of the facilities, moorings, boat storage and docks. Lake-area residents can join as associate or social members, and Deep Creek Lake Sailing Association members have reciprocal access to the club's social events. Summer socials include brunches, wine tastings, seafood nights, a corn roast and a pig roast, plus a joint opening reception with the DCLSA.
If you are curious about joining, email the club for a trial membership application.
