Deputy David G. Livengood Memorial

Deputy David G. Livengood Memorial is an outdoor memorial in Oakland honoring Garrett County Sheriff's Deputy David G. Livengood and his K-9 partner, Sarge, who were killed in the line of duty on January 18, 1979. It stands near the site where the deputy answered his last call, and it gives residents, officers and visitors a quiet place to pause and remember.

What Happened in 1979

Early that January morning, a silent alarm went off at Davidson's Army-Navy Discount Store in Oakland. Deputy Livengood responded with Sarge, a large white German shepherd he had raised from a puppy, and both were killed by two burglars, who fled in his cruiser and were arrested in West Virginia later that day. The Sheriff's Office notes it remains the first and only line-of-duty death of a Garrett County officer. Livengood was 31, a Marine Corps veteran and a Little League baseball coach.

How the County Remembers

Garrett County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99 and guests gather at the memorial during National Police Week, and each January the Sheriff's Office marks the anniversary with past and present K-9 handlers and members of the Livengood family. WoodmenLife-Oakland Chapter 11 and Marine Corps League Detachment 1234 have helped with work on the memorial, and WoodmenLife provided a U.S. flag for the site. His name is also carved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., and a memorial cabinet holding his photo, badge and medals, presented to his family in 1998, is displayed at the Sheriff's Office.

If you stop by, a quiet moment here is a fitting way to honor a deputy and his partner who gave their lives for this community.
