About
The Drane House is a historic log house in Accident, built in 1798 and owned by the Town of Accident. Its own site calls it the oldest standing structure in Garrett County. The Accident Drane House Association, a nonprofit, leads its restoration and preservation.
Lieutenant James Drane, a Revolutionary War officer, and his wife Priscilla moved to Accident from Prince George's County around 1800 with their children and became the town's first permanent settlers. The house was last lived in in 1952. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and the Town of Accident bought the property in 1987–1988. Volunteers took the building apart and rebuilt it piece by piece on its original site starting in 1991, and it was dedicated in 1994.
The Maryland Historical Trust describes it as a 1½-story log and frame house with a hall-and-parlor plan, beaded batten doors and hand-hewn ceiling joists. The Zion Lutheran Cemetery, where James and Priscilla Drane are buried, is beside the property, and a Memorial Garden of heirloom vegetables and flowers is on the grounds.
The association offers guided tours, including tours for schools and child care centers; tours may be affected by restoration work, so visitors are asked to contact the association first. The public reaches the house by Cemetery Road off Garrett Highway (Route 219) at the north end of Accident.
