About
Ferndale Baptist Church is a Baptist congregation at 642 Kings Run Rd on the outskirts of Oakland, meeting for Sunday School and Sunday worship built around preaching and teaching from the Bible. It is a small, close-knit church led by a team of elders, and newcomers and families of all ages are welcome.
A Church Founded in 1907
The church was organized on July 28, 1907, in the home of Mrs. J.W. Haney on Kings Run Road. For about a year and a half the congregation worshipped in a tent ordered from a Sears-Roebuck catalog while it built a church on Route 219 land donated by Howard Perrine of Baltimore, and that building was dedicated free of debt on November 22, 1908. Early pastor W.C. Hudson also served the Loch Lynn and Deep Creek Baptist churches, travelling between them by horse and buggy.
In early 2017 the church came back to Kings Run Road, moving into a new building that members largely built themselves and that brings all of its Sunday ministries under one roof. The original 1907 building on Route 219 north of Oakland, with a small graveyard beside it, is no longer used by the church; the church reports that the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has taken possession of that property.
What to Expect on a Sunday
Services are simple, with hymns and worship songs led on acoustic guitar and chosen for young and old alike, and the church usually reads from the ESV. Families worship together; there is no children's church or staffed nursery, but a private room is available for parents who need a moment. Worship runs about an hour, and many people stay afterward to catch up. The church lists Preaching Elder Jon Zeigler and Elders Mark Yoder and Jeremiah Zeigler among its leadership.
Ministries and Missions
Alongside Sunday School and worship, the church's history mentions prayer meetings, Vacation Bible School, Backyard Bible Clubs, women's small groups and a ministry at the Garrett County Fair. For missions, it supports a few indigenous ministries through two missions agencies and one ministry in Pakistan directly. Sermons are posted on the church's website.
If you are new to the Oakland area and looking for a small church family, the website's "What to expect" page is a good place to start.
