First United Community Field is the multi-purpose turf field on the Garrett College campus at 687 Mosser Rd in McHenry, next to the college's 700 Building. It is home to Garrett College Lakers baseball and Lady Lakers women's soccer, and it was built as a field the wider Garrett County community could use too.
Who Plays Here
The turf replaced the college's former baseball field and was first used in the summer of 2023. Because it dries quickly after rain or snow, it stays playable when grass fields around the county are not. Beyond the college teams, users have included:
- Northern Garrett and Southern Garrett high school baseball
- Garrett County American Legion baseball and its junior Legion squad
- The Pen-Mar League's Oakland Oaks adult baseball team
- Frostburg State University baseball
- Youth baseball and soccer camps and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes program
Portable outfield fencing and a removable mound let the field switch between regulation baseball and soccer setups, and the project plans included lighting, new aluminum bleachers and a press box with a concession area.
A Community-Funded Field
The field was paid for through a partnership of the Garrett County Commissioners, the State of Maryland and the college. First United Bank & Trust made the naming gift as part of the Garrett College Foundation's Athletics Capital Campaign, which also supports renovating the neighbouring 700 Building with locker rooms, athletic training space and coaches' offices. The field was formally dedicated in April 2026 with a ribbon cutting between games of a Lakers doubleheader.
