Flying Scot

Flying Scot is the Garrett County boatbuilder that makes the Flying Scot, a 19-foot daysailer and one-design racing sailboat, at its shop on 157 Cemetery Street in Deer Park. Beyond new boats, it sells used Scots, sails, parts and trailers and repairs Flying Scots, which makes it a useful stop for sailors on Deep Creek Lake and for Scot owners from farther away.

The Boat and Its History

The Flying Scot was designed by Gordon "Sandy" Douglass, who moved his boatbuilding business to Oakland, Maryland, in 1958, the year the first Scots were built. More than 5,000 have been completed, and the design was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 1998. The boat is 19 feet long with a 6-foot-9-inch beam and a centerboard, is typically raced with three sailors, and is roomy enough for family daysailing. The Flying Scot Sailing Association governs the class and organizes regattas nationwide.

The company traces back to the Gordon Douglass Boat Company. Harry Carpenter joined full time in 1978 after starting as an instructor at the company's sailing school, and Harry and Karen Carpenter bought the business in 1991. Their daughter Carrie and her husband, Tyler Andrews, are now owners too, and Tyler leads the shop floor.

New boats come with a demonstration of rigging, launching and sailing. The company says visitors are welcome at the factory, and many owners plan a trip to pick up a boat they have ordered.

You will see Scots racing at Deep Creek Yacht Club and in Deep Creek Sailing School's adult and private lessons, so it is easy to watch one sail before you buy.
