Garrett County Animal Shelter

Garrett County Animal Shelter is the county's public animal shelter, run together with Animal Control by the Garrett County Sheriff's Office. It sits at 152 Oakland Sang Run Road just outside Oakland, and it's the place to go if you want to adopt a dog or cat, have lost a pet, or need a county dog, cat or kennel license.

Adopting a Pet

The shelter's job is to find permanent homes for the animals in its care, through direct adoptions and by working with animal rescues. Adoptable pets are posted on the shelter's Petfinder page, so you can browse who is waiting before you call or stop in.

Garrett County runs this as a mandatory spay and neuter shelter. Every adopted animal must be spayed or neutered within 30 days of leaving the shelter, or within 30 days of turning six months old for younger animals. The Sheriff's Office also posts a fee schedule on its website.

Lost and Found Animals

Animals picked up around the county are posted on the shelter's page with a short note on where they were found, from Swanton to Mountain Lake Park. If your dog or cat has gone missing, check the list and contact the shelter to reclaim your pet. Animal Control, which handles other animal-related calls under the county's Animal Control Ordinance, has its own line at (301) 334-8096.

Licenses and Rabies Shots

Garrett County law requires every dog and cat to be licensed, and the shelter handles dog, cat and kennel license applications, with downloadable forms and the county's Kennel Standards on its website. Rabies vaccination is required by law in Maryland, as it is in neighboring West Virginia and Pennsylvania, so have your pet's rabies certificate handy when you apply.

Whether you are looking for a new companion or bringing a lost one home, a quick call to the shelter is the easiest way to start.
