Garrett County Arts Council

Garrett County Arts Council has supported the arts in Garrett County since 1976, covering visual arts, music, theatre, dance, literary and culinary arts. Its office and The Gallery Shop share a home at 108 S 2nd St in downtown Oakland, and its programs reach artists, students and arts lovers all over the county.

The Gallery Shop

The council's storefront is where you can see and buy work by more than 150 local artisans. The shop hosts monthly special exhibitions with lectures, workshops, demonstrations and entertainment, and each summer it runs a series of Saturday morning artist demonstrations covering crafts such as colored pencil, oil and cold wax, quilling, basket weaving, tatting, woodturning and spinning. It's a good place to find a piece made in the mountains you're visiting.

Programs Across the County

• Arts in Education: grants that bring Maryland artists into local schools for performances and workshops, support for the Student Arts Fair, student exhibits and high school literary journals, and college scholarships for graduating seniors in band, chorus, theater and visual arts
• Grantmaking in the Arts: general operating, project, independent artist and emergency artist relief grants
• Artist Studio Tour: an annual weekend tour of working artists' studios along Garrett County's scenic byways
• Ginseng Literary Journal and Page-to-Stage: an annual journal of local writing, celebrated with live readings by its authors
• Arts & Entertainment Districts: support for the state-designated A&E Districts in Oakland and Grantsville

The council also hosts Arts Connection networking events and an Arts Roundtable for artists and grantees.
