About
The Garrett County Behavioral Health Authority, long known as the Core Service Agency, manages the public mental health system for Garrett County from Suite 104 of the Garrett County Health Department at 1025 Memorial Dr in Oakland. It is the office that plans, funds and coordinates publicly supported behavioral health services in the county, and a good starting point if you are not sure where to turn for help.
What the Authority Does
The Behavioral Health Authority oversees publicly funded mental health services, looks for new funding, and works to integrate and expand the services already available, with the stated aim of a system that is seamless, coordinated and accessible for people of all ages. It is funded through grants from the Maryland Department of Health. The health department's page describes support that includes:
- Help obtaining medication
- Transportation to services
- Housing and employment assistance
- An Older Adult Outreach Program
The office also publishes the Garrett County Behavioral Health Provider Guide, a booklet of local counseling, recovery and support services that can help you find the right provider.
Part of the Local Health Department
The Authority shares the Memorial Drive building with the rest of the Garrett County Health Department and works alongside the county's Local Management Board, which coordinates programs for children and families. Fred Polce Jr. is listed as director.
In a Crisis
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 9-1-1 in an emergency. The health department also lists a 24-hour Garrett County mental health crisis line at (301) 501-3515.
Call the office when you need help navigating local behavioral health services or want a copy of the provider guide.
