About
The Garrett County Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of Garrett County, made up of three commissioners elected to four-year terms. Its office is in Room 207 of the county building at 203 South Fourth Street in downtown Oakland, and it's the place to turn with questions about county government, public meetings and the county budget.
What the Commissioners Do
Each commissioner must live in the district they represent, and the Board exercises the powers granted to it by the Maryland General Assembly. A County Administrator, appointed to work under the Board's direction, handles day-to-day operations, including financial planning, the annual budget process, personnel and county operations. The County Attorney also works out of this office.
Public Meetings
The Board holds regular public meetings, and agendas are posted on the commissioners' page ahead of each one. Meetings are live-streamed on the county website, and past meetings are kept in a public meeting archive, so you can follow county decisions without leaving home. Part of a meeting may be closed for an executive session when the law allows.
Services You Can Reach From Here
The commissioners' page is also a handy jumping-off point for everyday county business:
- Paying property taxes, water and sewer bills, ATV and snowmobile permit fees, or buying a residential trash permit through Citizen Connect
- Applying for residential permits and scheduling inspections
- Signing up for citizen notifications and emergency alerts
- Submitting a public information request or applying for a county board or committee seat
If you have a question about county business or want to share a comment with the Board, the office staff can point you in the right direction.
