About
Garrett County Community Action Committee is the county's community action agency, helping residents with food, housing, energy bills, early childhood education, transportation and senior services. Its main office is at 104 E Center St in Oakland, and its programs serve people across Garrett County.
Help for Households
Community Action, founded in 1965, works with partners to improve life for people in need and help them become more self-sufficient. Services include:
- Emergency Food Pantry at the main office
- Energy assistance for income-eligible residents facing a utility shut-off, with limited help for furnace repair or replacement and weatherization
- Housing services, including rent help and the Pathways to Home Ownership program
- Head Start, an early childhood program with educational, nutritional and health services for income-eligible families with children 5 and under
- Garrett Transit Service, the county's public transit system
- In-home senior care, with personal care and chore help for income-eligible residents 65 and older
One Address, Several Services
The 104 E Center St building is also the address for the Garrett County Area Agency on Aging, which runs senior programs including the Mary Browning Senior Center, and the phone number is shared. That makes the office a useful first stop if you're not sure which program you need. Community Action is also a partner, with Maryland Physicians Care and the Garrett County Health Department, in the 360 Access Hub at 360 West Liberty Street in Oakland, a community resource center focused on healthy food access.
Most programs ask you to call first to check eligibility and learn what documents to bring.
