About

Garrett County Department of Social Services is the local office of the Maryland Department of Human Services, serving residents across Garrett County from its building at 12578 Garrett Highway in Oakland. It's where you go to apply for food, cash, medical and child care assistance, to get help with child support, and to report concerns about the safety of a child or vulnerable adult.

Benefits and Family Support

The office takes applications and helps with ongoing cases for:

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and EBT card services
  • Temporary Cash Assistance and Temporary Disability Assistance
  • Emergency Assistance for Families and Children
  • Medical Assistance (Medicaid)
  • Child Care Scholarships
  • Public Assistance to Entrepreneurship, a workforce program

Local staff can walk you through an application in person and help you work out which programs you may qualify for.

Protective and Child Support Services

Social services staff handle child protective services, adult protective services, adult services and adoption. A separate after-hours line is published for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect, so help is available even when the office is closed.

The state's Child Support Administration also works from this building, helping parents open cases, set up and track support payments, and get answers about their accounts.

If you're not sure which program fits your situation, call the main line and staff will help you find the right place to start.
