Garrett County Dog Park

Garrett County Dog Park is a fenced, roughly 40,000-square-foot off-leash dog park run by the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club inside McHenry Community Park (the former Deep Creek Lions Club Park) at 1249 Bumble Bee Road, near McHenry. It's free to use year-round, which makes it a handy place to let a dog run during a lake vacation or on a local errand day.

Two Fenced Areas

The park has a small-dog area for dogs 30 pounds or lighter and a large area open to dogs of all sizes. Double-door entries keep dogs from slipping out, and you'll find waste disposal and dog-only play equipment inside. The park is open dawn to dusk in every season, though snow removal isn't guaranteed in winter.

A Community Project

The dog park was built in 2014 after a Gifted & Talented class at Southern Middle School surveyed residents and found strong support for one. The Lions Club built it with the class and HART for Animals, whose adoption center is next door, using state Program Open Space funding for fencing and local fundraisers. Donations go in an on-site drop box or online, and a Friends of the Dog Park volunteer group helps the club look after it.

Park Rules at a Glance

• Leash dogs when entering and leaving, and carry a leash inside
• Adults must accompany dogs and children; no more than three dogs per adult
• Dogs need current vaccinations and a license; no aggressive, sick or in-heat dogs
• Remove choke, prong and spike collars before entering
• Pick up after your dog inside and outside the fence
• No strollers, bikes, skateboards, toys for children, food, alcohol or smoking
• Play equipment is for dogs only, and digging isn't allowed
