About
Garrett County Financial Services is the county government department that bills and collects property taxes and utility charges and handles county purchasing. Its office is in Room 206 at 203 South Fourth Street in downtown Oakland, the main Garrett County government address, and it is where residents, property owners and vendors go with questions about county bills.
What You Can Take Care of Here
- Property tax payments, plus an online Property Tax Search and published tax rates
- Water and sewer utility bill payments
- Residential trash permits
- ATV and snowmobile permits
- Purchasing: current bids and vendor information, with a Vendor Self Service Portal for businesses that sell to the county
How the Office Is Organized
The department is made up of the Finance Office, the Billing & Collections Office and the Purchasing Division. Billing & Collections is the part most residents deal with, while Purchasing works with contractors and suppliers. New vendors are asked to submit an IRS Form W-9 along with the county's vendor form.
Paying Online
Many of these payments do not require a trip downtown. Citizen Connect, the county's online portal, lets you pay utility bills and other fees, apply for permits and sign up for emergency alerts, and the Property Tax Search lets you look up a parcel's bill. For second-home owners around Deep Creek Lake who are not in Oakland often, that can save a drive.
If you are unsure which bill or permit you need, a quick call to the office will point you in the right direction.
