Garrett County Health Department Behavioral Health is the county's public outpatient mental health and substance use program, based at 1025 Memorial Drive in Oakland. It serves children from age three, teens, adults and older adults across Garrett County, with a satellite office in Grantsville.
Services for Children and Families
The health department lists diagnosis and evaluation, individual counselling, family intervention, school-based services, Head Start observations and interventions, educational consultation, and child psychiatry delivered by telehealth. Group and child group therapy and family and marital therapy are also part of the program.
Services for Adults
For adults, the program offers intake and diagnosis, individual and group counselling, medication management, trauma services, anger management, geriatric services, and treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions. Substance use care includes an Intensive Outpatient Program for people who need more support than weekly counselling, medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), MVA-sanctioned DWI treatment, peer recovery support, jail-based treatment and pre-court evaluations. Employee assistance, referral services and inpatient referrals round out the list.
Crisis Support and Access
Walk-in and phone crisis services are available during the day. After hours and on weekends and state holidays, the department's brochure directs people to its on-call crisis counsellor at (301) 501-3515. In a crisis you can also call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 9-1-1 in an emergency. The department states that no one is denied services because of inability to pay, and a Spanish interpreter is available in person on request.
