About
Garrett County Public Schools – Central Office is the administrative headquarters of the county's public school system, home to the superintendent's office and the staff who support the Board of Education. It is at 770 Dennett Road, Oakland. Parents, students, job seekers and community members come here, or call, for help with enrollment, transportation and other district-wide questions.
What You Can Get Help With
The district's website points families to the services most often handled centrally:
- Student enrollment
- Transportation and bus questions
- School calendars
- Breakfast and lunch menus
- Safety and security information
- Employment opportunities
- Board policies and procedures, plus a staff directory
Starting with the central office is useful when a question covers more than one school or when you are new to the county and not sure which school serves your address.
How the School System Is Governed
According to the Maryland Manual, the Board of Education has six members: five elected by county voters to four-year terms and a nonvoting student member chosen for a one-year term. The board appoints the Superintendent of Schools, who runs the school system and serves as the board's executive officer, secretary and treasurer. The district describes its mission as building strong partnerships among Garrett County schools, families and communities.
If you are moving to the area or have a question that goes beyond your child's school, calling the central office is a good first step.
