About
The Garrett County Register of Wills is the state office where wills are filed and estates are opened and administered for Garrett County. It is in Room 103 of the county courthouse at 313 East Alder Street, Oakland. Families settling the estate of someone who has died, personal representatives, attorneys and anyone researching estate records will find it the place to start.
Services Offered
The office's site lists the tools and records people most often need:
- Estate search and claim search
- Forms and fee schedules
- Online invoice payment
- Legal notices for estates
- Plain-language guides on opening an estate, small estates, regular estates and modified administration
The Register of Wills works closely with the Garrett County Orphans' Court, which oversees estate matters in Maryland. The office notes that The Daily Record is the newspaper used for required legal notices.
Before You Go
Because the office is inside the courthouse, visitors pass through a security checkpoint at the entrance, so allow a few extra minutes. The office cannot accept filings by email; the website's contact form is for website questions only, and estate questions should go to the office directly by phone. A toll-free line, (888) 334-2203, is also published for callers outside the local area.
Reading the estate guides on the website before your visit can make your first appointment go more smoothly.
