About
Garrett County Transportation Museum is the Garrett County Historical Society's two-story museum at 112 E Liberty St in downtown Oakland. Opened in 2011, it follows how people have traveled and worked in the county, from horse-drawn buggies to Deep Creek Lake sailboats, and pairs well with a visit to the society's History Museum on South Second Street.
First Floor: Carriages to Cars
The ground floor is devoted to getting around on land, with a few surprises along the way:
- Carriages, sleighs and buggies
- Automobiles
- Fire department artifacts
- A recreation of A.D. Naylor's Blacksmith Shop, one of Oakland's earliest and most prominent businesses
- Buddy L Model T Fords, steel toys made on an assembly line in the early 1920s
Upstairs: The Deep Creek Gallery
The second floor tells the story of Deep Creek Lake and the nearby Maryland state parks at Herrington Manor, Swallow Falls, New Germany and Deep Creek. Highlights include an original sailboat built in the 1950s by the Gordon Douglass Boat Company and Garrett County's first snowmobile, from the 1960s. Exhibits rotate, so a return visit may turn up something new.
Before You Go
The museum closes for the winter season, but groups can arrange a visit on request through the historical society, which also welcomes school, bus and individual tours.
Call ahead to check whether the museum is in season and to set up a group visit.
