Garrett County Visitor Center

The Garrett County Visitor Center is the welcome center for Deep Creek Lake and the rest of Garrett County, run by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. It is at 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, on the right as you drive south on Route 219, near the base of the Wisp Resort ski slopes. It's a handy first stop for visitors planning a lake weekend, a ski trip or a fall foliage drive.

What You'll Find There

The Chamber produces the county's annual Visitors Guide and Activities Guide along with maps and brochures, and you can pick up copies at the center instead of waiting for them in the mail. Frommer's notes that the guide includes a calendar of events and information on local history, dining, lodging and shopping, and that the center has a "Travel by Boat" map of places around the lake with docks, which helps if you plan to explore by water.

Couples hosting weddings in the area can also arrange guides for out-of-town guests, either mailed or picked up at the center.

Who Runs It

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce manages the Visitors Center and also serves as the county's Convention & Visitors Bureau and destination marketing organization. Its website, visitdeepcreek.com, carries an interactive county map, a distance map and an online form to request a Visitor's Guide.

Getting There

From the east, take I-68 to exit 14A and follow Route 219 South for about 13 miles. From Pittsburgh, Morgantown and points west, take I-68 exit 4 onto Route 42 South, which becomes Route 219 South; the center is about a mile further on the right.

Stop in at the start of your trip and leave with a stack of maps and ideas for your stay.
