About
The Garrett County WIC Program is the Garrett County Health Department's nutrition program for pregnant women, new and breastfeeding mothers, infants and children up to age five. It is based at the Health Department at 1025 Memorial Drive, Oakland, with an outreach site in Grantsville by appointment. WIC is a free service, and it helps young families eat well during the years when good nutrition matters most.
Services Offered
Families enrolled in WIC can receive:
- Food benefits for items such as milk, cheese, juice, cereal, peanut butter or dried beans, eggs, infant formula, infant juice and infant cereal
- Breastfeeding support, including an electric pump loan for special needs
- Health screening
- Nutrition education and information
- Referrals to other services
- A Farmers Market Nutrition Program check
Who Can Apply
In general, you may qualify if you live in Garrett County, are pregnant, a new or breastfeeding mom, or have an infant or child under five, meet the program's income guidelines (taking part in a program such as Medicaid or the Maryland Children's Health Program can count), and have a nutritional risk identified through a health screening. Staff can help you work out whether your family is eligible.
