Garrett Regional Medical Center

Garrett Regional Medical Center is Garrett County's acute care hospital, located at 251 North 4th Street in Oakland. A member of the WVU Medicine health system, it serves about 46,000 people in Garrett County and neighbouring parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and its emergency department is open 24 hours a day, every day.

A Community Hospital Since 1950

The hospital opened on May 15, 1950 as Garrett County Memorial Hospital, funded by a bequest from George W. Loar. It grew over the following decades with an inpatient expansion in 1970, a coronary and intensive care unit in 1977, a family-centred maternity care centre and subacute care unit in the late 1990s, and a four-storey addition completed in 2016. In 2015 it took its current name and began a clinical affiliation with WVU Medicine, becoming a full partner in 2022. The hospital marked its 75th anniversary in 2025.

Services and Facilities

Today GRMC is a Joint Commission-accredited, 55-bed hospital with a four-bed ICU, a 10-bed subacute rehabilitation unit, a family-centred maternity suite and a 13-bed outpatient surgical unit. Services published by the hospital include:

• Cardiopulmonary and heart and vascular care
• Nephrology and wound care
• Maternity care, pediatrics and family medicine
• Behavioral medicine, with a behavioral health clinic in Oakland since 2019
• Laboratory and radiology
• Lyme disease navigation services

GRMC also runs Grantsville Medical Center in northern Garrett County, opened in 2017 for primary, urgent and specialty care. With more than 500 team members, it is also a major local employer.
