About

GFWC Civic Club of Oakland is a women's volunteer service club in Oakland that has been helping Garrett County organizations since 1911. It belongs to the General Federation of Women's Clubs and is a good fit if you want to give time to local causes and meet neighbours who do the same.

More Than a Century of Service

The club's own history starts with a very practical project: in 1911 a group of Oakland women cleaned up the town, hauling 64 wagon loads of trash and debris off its streets. The club joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1914 and is part of the Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs, Western District, so it runs its own local projects while sharing ideas with clubs across the state.

The Antique and Maker's Market

The club's main fundraiser is its antique, vintage and maker's market, held at the Oakland Community Center (the former armory) during Autumn Glory weekend in October. The show has run for more than four decades, and the money it raises is given out as grants to local nonprofit organizations. Even in 2020, when the show could not take place, the club still made donations to 11 local groups. Shoppers come for antiques, vintage pieces and handmade goods, and the club has raffled a handmade quilt at the market.

Getting Involved

Members gather for monthly lunch meetings from spring through fall, and the club offers several volunteer opportunities and welcomes new members. The quickest way to ask about joining or about the Autumn Glory market is to email the club.
