About
Gortner Union Church is an Anabaptist congregation at 4391 Mason School Rd in the rural Gortner community outside Oakland. It belongs to LMC, a fellowship of Anabaptist churches based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and gathers for Sunday worship and Bible-centred fellowship.
A Union Church With Long Roots
As its name suggests, Gortner Union began as a union church, a building shared by more than one tradition in a farming community too small to support separate congregations. A Depression-era WPA Historical Records Survey of Maryland churches lists the Union church at Gortner under Amish and United Brethren in Christ, a reminder of the Plain and Brethren families who settled this part of Garrett County. Today the congregation is part of LMC, the fellowship formerly known as Lancaster Mennonite Conference, which links Anabaptist churches across several states.
Before You Go
The church does not keep its own website, so its LMC directory page and phone are the easiest ways to check on Sunday worship. Mason School Road is a country road, so allow a little extra time if you are driving out from Oakland for the first time.
