About

Hospice of Garrett County is a nonprofit hospice serving people with a terminal illness, and their families, throughout Garrett County. Its main office is at 203 South Second Street in Oakland, with a second office on Garrett Highway in McHenry, and its team brings care to patients wherever they live.

How Hospice Care Works Here

Hospice of Garrett County provides in-home, or home-like, care for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its normal course. That includes cancer as well as conditions such as COPD, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease and Alzheimer's. Patients don't have to be homebound, and care can take place in a private home, an assisted living community or a nursing facility, as long as the patient stays within Garrett County so a nurse can reach them.

The care team includes:

  • Registered nurses who visit regularly, with a nurse on call around the clock
  • Certified nursing assistants for personal care and light housekeeping
  • Social workers who help with advance directives and community resources
  • Pastoral care, and patient care volunteers matched by shared interests
  • A hospice medical director who works alongside the patient's own local physician

Hospice also supplies medications related to the terminal illness, along with medical equipment such as hospital beds, wheelchairs and walkers.

Support for Families

Care doesn't stop with the patient. Hospice offers respite care for caregivers, and its bereavement program follows family members and loved ones for 13 months after a death. The organization states that no one is denied services based on ability to pay or insurance status.

Getting Started

You don't need to wait for a doctor to raise the subject: patients and families can call Hospice directly to ask questions or arrange a no-obligation consultation, and the line is answered at all hours. If someone you love is facing a serious illness, it can help to have that conversation early.
