About
Lakeside Assembly of God is a Pentecostal congregation of the Assemblies of God at 18012 Garrett Highway (US 219), north of Oakland on the way to Deep Creek Lake. It offers Sunday school, Sunday worship and a midweek Bible study, and it welcomes both year-round residents and people staying at the lake.
Nearly a Century of History
The church began as Sand Flat Tabernacle Assembly of God, which was formally organized under the General Council of the Assemblies of God on December 31, 1928, with J.C. Skipper elected as its first pastor. After 41 years in the original building, the congregation built a new church around 1969, and on May 2, 1985, it took the name Lakeside Assembly of God. Steve and Lisa Schuessler have served as lead pastors since September 2022.
What to Expect
Lakeside describes itself as a Bible-teaching church focused on the Holy Spirit and discipleship. Its stated mission is to reach people in Garrett County and the surrounding area so they can experience Jesus and the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit. In line with Assemblies of God teaching, the church practises water baptism by immersion, observes communion, and teaches baptism in the Holy Spirit and divine healing.
Sunday mornings begin with corporate prayer, followed by Sunday school and the worship service. The church also holds themed services around holidays and fellowship gatherings such as a Sunday school picnic at the church pavilion.
Missions at Home and Abroad
Missions are a core part of church life. The congregation supports Assemblies of God programs including Speed The Light, Light for the Lost and Aged Minister Assistance. It also supports individual missionaries serving in places such as Bangladesh, Japan, Senegal, Ecuador, Kenya, France and Germany.
If you are visiting the lake, you are welcome to stop in on a Sunday, and you can send a prayer request through the church website at any time.
