Lazy Minnow

Lazy Minnow is a family-owned fishing charter, boat ride and bait shop business at 23250 Garrett Hwy in McHenry on Deep Creek Lake. It covers both sides of a fishing trip: a guided charter if you want a captain to put you on fish, and a self-serve bait and tackle shop if you would rather head out on your own.

Charters and Boat Rides

Captain Gary, who is U.S. Coast Guard licensed and has more than ten years on Deep Creek Lake, runs intro, half-day and full-day fishing charters. Rods, reels, tackle, lures, live bait and life jackets are included, and the longer trips include fish cleaning. Charters use a bass boat equipped with GPS, fish finders and Live Scope for small parties, or a 22-foot center console for larger groups, and target species include largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. Every angler needs a valid Maryland fishing license, and everyone on board completes an online liability waiver first.

If you would rather cruise than cast, Lazy Minnow also offers sunset cruises, sightseeing tours and private charters on a 22-foot Four Winns Horizon bowrider, with an optional tubing add-on. Private trips work for birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions and corporate outings.

The Self-Serve Bait Shop

The bait shop near a Deep Creek Lake boat launch runs on personal door codes: register once online, get a four-digit code by email, and let yourself in when you need supplies. It stocks live bait such as minnows, nightcrawlers, leeches, wax worms and shiners, along with hooks, line, lures, terminal tackle and tools, plus ice, firewood, drinks, snacks and sunscreen. Fishing and hunting licenses are sold too.

A New Lake Business

Lazy Minnow celebrated its launch with a Garrett County Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting in July 2026.

Register for bait shop access before your trip, and you can pick up bait whenever you are ready to fish.
