About
Loch Lynn Heights Wetlands Trail is an easy nature walk in the town of Loch Lynn Heights, starting from the parking area at the end of West Second Avenue. About 0.6 mile of elevated boardwalk and gravel path loops through a wetland beside the town's athletic fields and along the Little Youghiogheny River, making it a good stop for families and anyone after a short, easy walk.
What You'll See
The boardwalk lifts you above the wet ground so you can look into the marsh without muddy shoes. Interpretive signs along the way explain what a wetland is and identify the plants and animals that live in this one, from the tree-lined sections of path to the open water. An observation deck reaches out into the wetland for a closer view and includes a panel on the history of Loch Lynn Heights. A free audio-and-text tour of the trail is available through the STQRY app, with four stops covering the trail, wetland plants, wildlife and the deck.
Part of the Town's Park System
The trail was built with Maryland Project Open Space grants and Garrett County Commissioners park grants. It sits within the town's Community Park, which also has an athletic complex used by the Mountaintop Soccer League, a pavilion with picnic tables that can be rented for gatherings, and a playground with separate areas for ages 1 to 5 and 6 to 12, including an inclusive, wheelchair-friendly play space.
To get there, turn onto West Second Avenue from Gorman Street and drive to the end of the road; the parking area is on your left. Pair the walk with a picnic or playground stop for an easy family outing.
