About
Lodestone Golf Course is Wisp Resort's 18-hole mountain course on a ridge above Deep Creek Lake in McHenry, reached via Lodestone Clubhouse Dr. It is open to the public as well as resort guests, so you can book a round whether you are staying at Wisp or just visiting the lake.
The Course
Hale Irwin, the three-time U.S. Open champion, designed Lodestone with Todd Schoeder of Design Workshop, and the course opened in 2010 on Marsh Mountain beside the Wisp ski area. It plays as a par 72, stretching to more than 7,400 yards from the back tees, with six sets of tees so golfers of different skill levels can pick a comfortable length. Fairways of bent grass wind through forest and around natural rock outcroppings, with undulating greens and long views across the mountain ranges around Deep Creek Lake. Two holes to look out for:
- The 13th, a downhill par 5 that drops about 110 feet from tee to green
- The 17th, a par 3 that asks for a tee shot over a gully to a sloped green guarded by a rock cliff
Practice, Lessons and Membership
There is a driving range and putting green for warming up, plus club rentals and a golf shop. Wisp offers one-on-one lessons covering short game, full swing and course strategy, and a beginner clinic that also covers rules and etiquette. Seasonal Lodestone memberships are available for individuals, families and junior golfers.
