About
Mad Men Lake House is a 6-bedroom, 4-bath lakefront home near McHenry that sleeps 14, run directly by a small military family that owns Mad Men Vacation Rentals. The house is a newer build styled in mid-century modern with a rustic edge, and it suits families and groups who want lake time in summer and Wisp skiing in winter, since the owners place it less than 2 miles from Wisp Resort.
Inside the House
Each room has its own theme, so the house feels more like a set than a standard rental. The open great room has a gas fireplace, a tall gable window and sliding doors facing the lake, plus a Bluetooth record player with a shelf of vinyl and a hanging swing chair. The open kitchen has GE Café stainless appliances and a gas range.
- Main level: the Wisp Ski master suite (king bed, soaking tub and separate shower), a "Camp Mad Men" room with a tree-house bed, and a fishing-themed queen room with a door to the deck
- Lower level: a second king master suite with its own bath, a "Canoe on the Lake" king room closest to the hot tub, and a "Cabin in the Mountains" king room
- Retro game room: a 1970s-style wall mural, pool table, air hockey, skee-ball, Pac-Man, a card table and a wet bar with a vintage drink fridge
Two workspaces, one a rolling standing desk, help if someone has to log in during the trip, and the owners keep a crib, two pack-and-plays and a booster seat on hand for little ones.
Outdoor Spaces and Lake Access
A two-tier deck steps down toward the water: the upper deck has a lounger and propane grill, and the lower deck and patio have shaded seating, string lights, an outdoor ping-pong table, the hot tub and a fire pit. The private dock is for fishing, swimming and tying up a boat or jet skis while it is in the water (it comes out at the end of October), and the house comes with two kayaks, a two-person canoe and life vests.
Good to Know
The house is listed as dog-friendly. The driveway is steep, and the owners require a 4WD or AWD vehicle in winter; other cars can use the parking area at the top of the hill. The street address is shared when you book.
Book directly with the owners through the Mad Men Vacation Rentals website, or call or text with questions about dates, pets and the dock.
