Mary Browning Senior Center

Mary Browning Senior Center is Oakland's senior center, a place where older adults in and around Oakland can share a meal, stay active and get connected with services. It is run by Garrett County Community Action Committee (GCCAC) inside its building at 104 East Center Street in Oakland.

What Happens at the Center

The center offers social and recreational activities, educational programs, trips and legal assistance for older adults. Regular offerings listed for the center include:

• a shared dine-in meal through the Eating Together program, open to adults 60 and older and their spouses of any age
• fitness activities and exercise equipment
• informational presentations
• cards and bingo
• live music

The Eating Together meal is one of five congregate nutrition sites GCCAC runs around the county, alongside centers in Grantsville and Friendsville and sites in Accident, Swanton and Kitzmiller.

One Building, Several Services

104 East Center Street is also home to Garrett County's Area Agency on Aging, which the Maryland Department of Aging lists at the same address and phone number. That means the senior center sits under the same roof as GCCAC's wider aging services: home-delivered meals for frail, homebound older adults, Senior Information and Assistance for people 60 and older, in-home Senior Care help for adults 65 and older who meet income guidelines, the Family Caregiver Support Program, and senior health insurance counseling. Maryland Access Point, the state's one-stop information service for long-term services and supports, is listed in the county resource directory under Community Action too. If you come for lunch and have a question about meals at home or caregiver help, staff in the same building can point you in the right direction.
