About
Maryland Broadband Cooperative (MdBC) is a not-for-profit, member-owned broadband cooperative based in Salisbury that builds and runs fiber network infrastructure across Maryland. It has served its members since 2006. Its stated mission is to provide reliable, competitive digital connectivity in unserved and underserved areas.
The cooperative sells wholesale services to its members and clients. These include high-speed transport, dark fiber leasing, colocation, fiber splicing, Smart Hands on-site technical support, and utility mapping and asset protection locating services. Its customers include healthcare systems, government and public-sector agencies, internet service providers and telecom carriers, education and research institutions, and enterprises and data centers. Qualifying organizations can join and get access to its wholesale pricing and shared infrastructure.
By 2024 the cooperative had 79 members, including internet service providers, government entities, healthcare providers, emergency management services, higher education institutions and electric cooperatives. Its fiber network then spanned about 2,500 miles, with 33 points of presence across Maryland and Virginia. In 2025 it finished all of its network builds funded by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, extending middle-mile infrastructure for last-mile connectivity in underserved and rural communities. It also hosted its first Broadband Leadership Forum that year.
