McHenry Community Park

McHenry Community Park, long known as the Deep Creek Lions Club Park, is a free community park at 1249 Bumble Bee Road, next to the HART for Animals center near McHenry. The Deep Creek Lake Lions Club operates it on county-owned land under a long-term lease, and it packs a ball field, picnic pavilion, dog park, trails and a disc golf course into one stop.

What's in the Park

• A fenced softball field with bleachers and covered dugouts
• A covered picnic pavilion with electric service
• A play area and open space
• Men's and women's restrooms, open April through October
• The fenced Garrett County Dog Park (see its own listing)
• The Glades at Meshach Run, an 18-hole disc golf course with turf tees and MVP Black Hole Pro baskets, opened in 2022 and free to play
• The Meshach Browning Trails and History Center, with interpretive markers on the life of the early Garrett County hunter and settler and his wife Mary
• The Blind Camper and Skier Art Garden, plus a Little Free Pantry and Little Free Library

Use of the park is free to everyone. You can reserve the pavilion or other facilities for exclusive use for a small fee by sending the club's Park Usage Form, which you download from the club's park page.

Built by the Community

The park began in 1981, when the Lions Club used Maryland Program Open Space funding to build a softball field on undeveloped land. Restrooms and the pavilion followed in 2003, the dog park in 2014, the Meshach Browning trail system on adjoining county parcels in 2019, and the disc golf course in 2022. Local schools, Garrett College, Scouts and volunteers have all added pieces along the way, and the club lists a pump track, accessible playground and pavilion expansion among future projects.
