About
Monroe Run Trail is a hiking-only path of about 4.6 miles in Savage River State Forest, running one way between a parking area off New Germany Road and the lower end near Big Run State Park and the Savage River Reservoir. It suits hikers who want a moderate day on a quiet stream-valley trail, and backpackers putting together a multi-day loop through the forest.
What You'll Find on the Trail
The route follows Monroe Run along an old Civilian Conservation Corps connection road from the 1930s, and the crumbling bridge abutments you pass are the main remains of that road. Maryland DNR rates the trail moderate and notes frequent stream crossings, none of them bridged, so expect to wade or rock-hop and plan footwear accordingly. The surrounding Monroe Run Natural Area covers more than 1,400 acres of eastern hemlock, birch and oak, with a coldwater stream that holds native brook trout and spring wildflowers before the trees leaf out. DNR's natural-area page also mentions steep, rugged sections, ticks and wood nettles.
Planning Your Hike
- Trailhead: DNR suggests starting from New Germany Road so you avoid the uphill climb at the end.
- Uses: Hiking only; no bikes or other mechanical propulsion.
- Pets: Leashed pets are allowed throughout Savage River State Forest.
- Leave No Trace: State forests are trash free, so pack out everything you bring in. Metal detecting and removing artifacts are prohibited.
- Wet weather: Allow a day or two for trails to dry after heavy rain, or call the forest office for current conditions.
Backpacking the Loop
Monroe Run is one leg of the forest's backpacker loop, which links Meadow Mountain Trail, Savage River Road, Poplar Lick and the New Germany State Park trails, with primitive campsites along the way. An overnight trip needs a backpack camping permit from Savage River State Forest headquarters on Headquarters Lane in Grantsville or its self-registration kiosk.
Give the forest office a call before you go and you'll have the latest word on stream levels and trail conditions.
