MoonShadow is a scratch-kitchen restaurant and bar at 145 Bumble Bee Rd, McHenry, MD 21541, in the Deep Creek Lake area. Owner Lisa Jan built it around fresh food made without preservatives or additives, with local and sustainable ingredients where possible, and the menu carries plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices alongside burgers, seafood and comfort plates.

What's on the Menu

The menu is split into small plates, entrées, salads, sandwiches and burgers, a kids' menu and desserts, with a separate brunch menu. Dishes are labeled vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or gluten-free, which makes it easy to order for a mixed table. A few examples:

• Small plates such as cauliflower "wings," crab dip, black bean hummus and Savage Meatballs made with chorizo from Savage Mt. Farm and local beef
• Entrées including pesto-crusted salmon, coconut curry mussels, lamb gnocchi, cauliflower steak and a meatloaf made with meat from local farms
• Grass-fed beef burgers, plus a plant-based Beyond Burger
• Desserts like orange olive cake and a brown butter brownie

Everything is made to order, so the kitchen notes that busy times can take a little longer.

The Bar and the Room

The full bar pours house cocktails such as a smoky mezcal margarita, Lunar Bloom sangria and a Rooted Old Fashioned with beet juice and maple, along with draft and canned beers that include Screech Owl brews from nearby Bruceton Mills, West Virginia, a short wine list and non-alcoholic beers. Coffee comes from local roaster Basecamp Coffee. Inside, the dining room is eclectic and artsy, with mismatched place settings and vintage salt-and-pepper shakers, and there is a covered patio as well.

MoonShadow hosts live bands and invites musicians to inquire about booking. The restaurant strongly suggests reservations, and you can also order carry-out or delivery and buy gift cards online through Toast. Lisa Jan also runs Blue Moon Rising, a set of eco-minded cabins on 116 wooded acres nearby, if you're looking for somewhere to stay.
