Mountain Flour Bakery

Mountain Flour Bakery is the bakery counter inside Deep Creek Shop 'n Save Fresh at 24586 Garrett Highway in McHenry. It keeps a fresh display case of everyday baked goods and takes orders for custom wedding cakes and special-occasion cakes, so it's a handy stop whether you need a box of cookies for the lake house or a cake for a celebration.

From the Display Case

The case changes with the seasons, but the bakery's menu runs well beyond cookies:

• Pepperoni rolls and pepperoni bread, plus potato rolls, challah and focaccia
• Bagels, donuts, muffins and sweet loaves
• Pastries such as bear claws, turnovers, cream puffs, scones, pecan sticky buns and apple fritters
• Gobs, brownies and shortbread bars
• Pies, cheesecakes, fruit tarts and fruit crisps
• A long list of cookies, from snickerdoodles and peanut butter blossoms to macaroons and Mexican wedding cookies

Because the bakery sits inside the supermarket, you can pick up a pie or a dozen cookies on the same trip as your groceries.

Wedding and Custom Cakes

Custom wedding cakes and made-to-order celebration cakes are the bakery's specialty. You choose from dozens of cake flavors, including pink champagne, apple spice, chocolate Guinness and key lime, along with fillings such as red raspberry, Bavarian cream and chocolate mousse, and icings from buttercreams to fondant. Round, square and sheet cakes are available in a range of sizes, and ice cream cakes are offered June through September.

Ordering Ahead

Most bakery orders need 48 hours' notice, and cake consultations are by appointment only. Since not every item is in the case every day, call ahead if you have something specific in mind.
