Mountain State Brewing Co

Mountain State Brewing Co. is a brewpub and restaurant at 6690 Sang Run Rd in McHenry, near Deep Creek Lake. It pairs the company's own ales with wood-fired flatbread pizzas, and it's an easygoing stop for families, groups and anyone coming off the lake or the slopes.

A West Virginia Brewery at the Lake

Mountain State Brewing poured its first beer in September 2005 in Thomas, West Virginia, where its brewhouse and pub sit high in the mountains. The Deep Creek Lake pub followed as one of the company's brewpub-and-restaurant locations, and Mountain State beers also turn up on tap at bars and restaurants around Garrett County. The house beers are brewed down the road in Thomas, and long-running favorites have included Almost Heaven Amber Ale, Cold Trail Ale, Seneca IPA and Miner's Daughter Oatmeal Stout.

Flatbreads and More

Wood-fired flatbreads are the core of the menu, from a simple cheese or Margherita to house builds such as Big Casino, Fire on the Mountain, a Fire Fly Farms flatbread and a s'mores dessert flatbread. Alongside them you'll find:

• Appetizers such as pretzel with beer cheese, spinach and artichoke dip and country caviar
• Sandwiches including a Reuben, French dip, gyro and an apple butter pulled chicken
• Salads, a kids menu, and house-made dips, sauces and barbecue sauces sold in bulk

The bar adds specialty cocktails and the brewery's homemade root beer, and beer is available to go in 32 oz and 64 oz containers.

Before You Go

The pub makes its flatbread dough fresh three times a week, and you can order ahead for pickup through the restaurant's website. Groups of 10 or more can request a reservation online; there are no private rooms, but the pub does host events, and a catering menu of party-sized flatbread trays, dips and shareables is available for lake-house gatherings. There's also a dog-friendly outdoor patio and live music.

Ordering ahead is a simple way to have flatbreads ready when you roll in from a day on the water.
